Here are a few basic points on how to avoid distracted driving:

  •  But because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction. If you have trouble avoiding checking your texts, force yourself to turn your phone off or place it in your glove compartment.
  • Pull over. If making a call is necessary, pull over to a safe area before doing so.
  • Ask a passenger to make a call or navigate for you.
  • Refrain from smoking, eating, drinking, reading and any other activity that takes your attention off the road.
